After the more methodical Atomfall, Rebellion Developments is shifting to something far tenser and shooter-focused in Alien Deathstorm. New gameplay highlights the sheer hordes you’ll deal with, while also confirming its release in Spring 2027 for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC.
As showcased on day one of Xbox @ Gamescom, head of design Ben Fisher talks about the Engineer’s arrival. The deathstorm is already in full swing, and they explore the ever-collapsing environment, including a nuclear reactor that’s on the verge of meltdown. Interestingly, Rebellion is implementing some sandbox lessons from Atomfall, as you’ll have the freedom to diagnose, analyze, and solve problems with the help of Squire.
Naturally, an Aliens-style motion sensor is available, hopefully keeping you informed of any nearby threats. It can become clouded in noise depending on circumstances, so expect more than a few surprises from the hostile populace. Horror fans can also rest assured that the scares are tuned differently depending on your approach, which adds to the replay value. That applies to all encounters, as they’re procedural.
You’ll start with a pistol, but an SMG and shotgun become available, which you can upgrade and modify with blueprints and crafting parts for attachments. The shotgun is especially handy in close encounters, especially as the aliens make their presence known. Overall, it’s intriguing – here’s hoping the gunplay is more responsive than Atomfall when it’s out next year.
