From what little we’ve seen of Alien: Isolation 2, especially its Prologue demo from Gamescom, it’s clear that Creative Assembly is channeling everything that made the original a success. However, the contrast when players venture beyond the claustrophobic interiors and into more open spaces is stark.
Unlike the first game, your trials to evade the Xenomorph will span a colony world, including an outpost where others are likely to become prey. Speaking to TechRadar, principal UI artist Laura Mouther said, “I think the contrast between claustrophobia and pressure versus vulnerability and exposedness will make the player have to think on their feet.”
One new variable is the weather, which feeds into the need to “improvise.” While your first thought may be that it muffles footsteps and makes it easier to run past the Xenomorph, the opposite is also true, and you may not hear it approaching before it’s too late.
“The alien is the perfect hunter. It will adapt to those situations, to those environments. And you will have to adapt to our environment,” said Mouther. It’s a “new experience,” to be sure, but she reaffirms that it’s “not unfair.”
“This alien is also not cheating. If it can’t see you, it can’t see you, right? If it can’t hear you, it can’t hear you. We will give players enough time to get to grips with it. But it is an intense experience and a tough game, and that is what the community loved about [the first game]. And we will stick through to that.”
We’ve already seen how the weather plays a part in the story, washing away the wreckage of a ship with protagonist Blake and the Xenomorph within. As much as the rain could obscure visibility, perhaps thunder flashes could expose you if you’re not careful. Of course, this can create dramatic moments where you suddenly see the Xenomorph’s massive silhouette against the storm, even if it can’t see you.
While we still need to see more, Alien: Isolation 2 is shaping up to be quite the horror experience, especially for those who have waited years for a sequel. It’s coming to Xbox Series X/S, PS5, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2, with a release date to be decided.
