It’s been a couple of years since the launch of Amnesia: Rebirthbut the wait until the next mainline game in the series isn’t going to be a very long one. Frictional Games has announced Amnesia: The Bunker, the next instalment in its horror franchise, and it looks like it’s going to bring about a radical shift in the Amnesia formula.

Friction Games describes Amnesia: The Bunker as a semi-open world game. Players will play as an amnesiac French soldier who finds himself in an abandoned French World War 1 bunker. The bunker’s dark, creepy, and ill-lit corridors will be freely explorable, with “hardly any scripted events” in the game. Beware though, because you’ll be dealing with “constant tension” brought about by an “ever-present threat”- a stalker foe described as “an otherworldly creature”.

Amnesia: The Bunker will also place an added emphasis on emergent gameplay, prioritizing player choice first and foremost and allowing many different ways to overcome threats and challenges, including puzzles and any other obstacles that might fall in your path. Equipped with a revolver and a “noisy” dynamo flashlight, players will have “total control of their moment-to-moment decisions” and will also have to carefully manage and utilize the very limited resources that will be available in the game.

Check out the game’s announce trailer and a batch of gameplay screenshots below.

Amnesia: The Bunker is due out in 2023 for PlayStation, Xbox, and PC.
