While there have been rumours going on about a potential remake for one of the most beloved entries in the Assassin’s Creed franchise – Black Flag – these rumours are getting fuelled even further thanks to comments by the voice actor for protagonist Edward Kenway, Matt Ryan.

As spotted by social media platform X user Zephryss, Ryan spoke to a fan about Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag. While signing an autograph, Ryan asked the fan if they had beaten the game. When they replied with “yeah, a while ago,” Ryan said that the fan “may have to beat it again.” He went on to say that “there’s a reason I say that but I can’t say anything,” which would imply that there might indeed be a remake or remaster in the works.

Rumours about Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag getting a remake first started popping up back in 2023. At the time, the game was believed to be in its early stages of development. Later reports indicated that it might be being developed under the codename Obsidian, and that it is a ground up remake made with the Anvil engine rather than just a remaster.

Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag was a follow-up to Assassin’s Creed 3 which, hot on the heels of wrapping up the Ezio trilogy, wasn’t as well received as Assassin’s Creed 2 or Brotherhood. However, Black Flag was considered by many to be quite a return to form for the franchise, thanks in large part to its emphasis on open-world gameplay that revolved around naval combat and its pirate themes.

Taking place in the Golden Age of Piracy, Black Flag puts players into the shoes of Edward Kenway who gets wrapped up in all sorts of conspiracies after accidentally joining up with the Assassin’s brotherhood. As is tradition for the Assassin’s Creed franchise, Black Flag features plenty of historical characters, including Edward “Blackbeard” Teach.

Earlier this month, Pure Arts – the company behind several officially-licensed merchandise for different franchises including Assassin’s Creed – may have hinted towards an announcement for a remake being closer than originally thought.

Assassin’s Creed fans out there, you should be aware that there is something going on with Edward [Keyway]”, said one host of a video by Pure Arts when asked about why they weren’t showcasing a figure based on Black Flag protagonist Edward Kenway. The artist was interrupted by another one saying “wait has that been announced?”

“I think so, I’m pretty sure I saw rumors about it. No, I definitely saw at article about it”, responded the first artist. Later on, the first artist also said, “So there’s going to be something going on with Edward, and our PVC 1/8th scale statue will reflect that accordingly.”

The most recent title in the franchise was Assassin’s Creed Shadows, which was released earlier this year after facing several delays. Taking place in the late Sengoku-period of Japanese history. The game features two protagonists – Naoe and Yasuke – and is available on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. For more details, check out our review.
