They considered having a different actor to be the voice of the male Shepard.
Right now it’s hard to imagine anyone else voicing male Shepard, but it is true Mark Meer was not the first choice. Originally Mark just a temporary fill-in and the developers just needed a temporary voice, so that they could see how the first prototype of the game worked out. However the thought of having to re-do everything from scratch was a time consuming process, and plus the developers thought that Mark was doing a fantastic job of voicing Shepard, so they decided to make him permanent. And the rest as they say is history.
