The big challenge in conceiving the first Mass Effect was keeping it simple
The Mass Effect lore has tons and tons of layers over it, and even those layers had layers. It’s not to say it was complicated, but the un-initiated, if starting with Mass Effect 2, would have trouble connecting the dots and storyline. But the Mass Effect series is far from simple, in fact the actual earliest ideas for Mass Effect had to do with another species, and we ultimately find out we are built to serve them.
