Baldur's Gate 3_03

As you adventure through Faerûn in Baldur’s Gate 3, Gold quickly becomes a necessity. You can find plenty of weapons, supplies, armor and potions throughout your travels by looting multiple containers (and corpses). However, some of the best stuff is with vendors, and they’re not cheap, especially when you have to outfit an entire party.

Fortunately, this is a Larian Studios game, which means there are several ways to earn heaps of Gold, aside from looting chests, containers, crates and slain enemies. Some are savory, and others less so, but with the power of Quick Save/Load, you can try again without any consequences. Let’s go over a few of them here.

How to Earn Gold and Get Rich Early

Pick up and Sell Everything

With all of the bodies, not to mention tombs, crates, chests and bookshelves, you can pick up several things. You may even find weapons like maces, swords, spears and bows lying around, even though you have enough for your party. The solution? Sell them. Pick up anything, and everything, look for the nearest vendor and sell them off. Don’t neglect paintings or jewellery since those can sell for decent prices.

Not everyone will have enough cash to pay for everything you can offer, and your inventory can quickly pile up. It’s a good idea to send any items that aren’t needed to the Traveller’s Chest in camp. Right-click and select “Send to Camp” from your inventory. Ctrl-click to select specific items or Shift-click for a range. Some junk won’t sell for much, but considering the amount you find, it can amount to decent returns, and all you have to do is pick it up.

You acquire higher-tier loot upon progressing through the story, and while it’s tempting to sell all of them, consider keeping some if you want to have Gale in your party. No spoilers, but it’s vital to his continued presence.

If you’re not too picky about hoarding scrolls and various potions/Elixirs, you could sell some of those as well. It’s not advised, since it’s always better to have it and not need it than vice versa, but still, a viable method for money if you’re lacking. As you collect more ingredients and can craft potions and the like, you can make them without spending Gold on more. It’s good for saving on costs, but if you’re full up, sell them for extra money.

Pickpocketing

Of course, anyone who has played a cRPG will tell you that the real money is in Pickpocketing. It’s a skill that Bards and Rogues excel at due to Sleight of Hand, but since its main attribute is Dexterity, anyone with a high enough Dex roll can pull it offer. Succeeding the stealth check is important, but there are ways around this.

First, ensure the area around a vendor is as shadowy as possible (switch off any braziers or light sources nearby). Next, disconnect your party, having one member speak to the vendor while the high Dex stat character (ideally, you) sneaks around them. The others should ideally be far away from all of this. Right-click on them and select Pickpocket to open their inventory. Select an item to steal, pass the dice roll, and claim that item for your own.

The die roll will take your Proficiency and any bonuses into account, so make sure to cast Bless on the thieving character beforehand. If an item is of high rarity or extremely valuable, like a pile of Gold, it will have a high difficulty level. So instead, steal smaller items to either outfit your party or sell back to the vendor for money. Lower the stack of Gold in their inventory to make it easier to steal.

Save after each successful Pickpocket so you can reload if things go south or you fail a dice roll. When done, have the thieving character leave immediately. After this, have your speaking character exit and reconvene with everyone. The vendor will get angry at being robbed, but they’ll reset to their original position after some time.

Vendor inventories refresh each day, so after a Long Rest, return for another round of thieving and earn Gold quickly.
