Baldur’s Gate 3 Director Says Sales Are “Almost Double” of Divinity: Original Sin 2

Larian Studios founder and game director Swen Vincke reveals that the acclaimed RPG performed "beyond what we expected."

Larian Studios has made headlines with its panel at GDC 2024, as founder Swen Vincke announced that Baldur’s Gate 3 wouldn’t receive any DLC, expansions or sequel. He also revealed that the studio was working on DLC, which was cancelled due to not “really coming from the heart.” The acclaimed RPG is still massive hit for Larian, with “way over” 10 million copies sold.

However, in a recent interview with GameSpot, Vincke indicated the sales total could be even higher. “It’s almost doubled Divinity: Original Sin 2 now, so it’s doing really well, as Divinity: Original Sin 2 was very successful. So it did beyond what we expected.”

While Larian never officially announced how many units Original Sin 2 had sold, Vincke revealed at a GDC 2019 talk that the first game sold 2.5 million units. In an interview with Eurogamer last year in July, he said the sequel sold three times as much, placing it at least 7.5 million sales. By that math, Baldur’s Gate 3 has sold an impressive 15 million units.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is available for Xbox Series X/S, PS5 and PC. It will receive further updates for mod support, crossplay and more evil endings.
