Black Myth: Wukong has continued to impress in all of its showings since its announcement a few years ago, and if the newest gameplay footage and details are anything to go by, it’s continuing to take solid shape.

IGN has published a new hands-on preview that not only showcases plenty of new gameplay footage for the Soulslike action RPG, but also reveals new details on its combat, mission structure, and more. As per the preview, Black Myth: Wukong adopts a semi-open world approach, with players going through one large area from another, and each area also featuring multiple branching paths. In true Soulslike fashion, if you explore the maps enough, you’ll also run into hidden bosses.

Where the combat is concerned, in spite of its similarities to Soulslike titles, Black Myth: Wukong is apparently going for a different feel for the combat, the bulk of which seems to arise from the main weapon being a staff. There are three combat stances to choose between, and players can combine both light and heavy attacks. Using heavy attacks requires Focus, which is something players can gain by unleashing light attacks.

Meanwhile there’s also plenty of emphasis that’s seemingly being placed on magic. For instance, using Transformation Abilties, players can transform into different beasts and animals, like a wolf wreathed in fire, while new Transformation Abilities can also be unlocked by completing certain side quests. In addition, magic spells can also be used, as one would expect. Check out the video below for more details.

Black Myth: Wukong is due out next year for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. New details on the game will also be shared at Gamescom Opening Night Live on August 22.
