Developer Gearbox has confirmed through social media that co-op looter shooter Borderlands 4 will be getting a photo mode. However, the feature was seemingly not ready for the game’s September 12, launch, and is slated for release with a post-launch update. On social media platform X, Borderlands 4 creative director Graeme Timmins confirmed photo mode for the title.

“Hey guys, wanted to confirm that Photo Mode will be coming to Borderlands 4,” announced Timmins on X. “It’ll be a feature that we add in an update after the game launches.”

As for why it won’t be available at launch, Timmins elaborated that the studio wanted to focus on aspects of the game it deems more important, including the moment-to-moment gameplay experience. According to Timmins, Gearbox had always planned to add photo mode to Borderlands 4. However, focusing on things that affected gameplay was more important.

“I had us prioritise polishing some other elements, more core to the moment-to-moment experience,” wrote Timmins. “We’ve always planned for it, and had it tasked up, we just needed to spend a bit more time on things that would directly impact QoL of playing the game.”

In a response to another post, Timmins also wrote about Borderlands 4 lacking the auto sell feature that allowed players to better manage their inventories in Borderlands 3. Timmins notes that, while the feature was originally added to Borderlands 3 closer to the end of that game’s life cycle, with Borderlands 4, the studio didn’t want to devalue loot by including auto sell right from the get go. Rather, at launch, the upcoming shooter will include the option for players to “Take as Junk” when they find loot they don’t want to use. Through this, players can use the Sell All Junk feature at vendors.

“I mentioned it a couple of weeks ago, but the TLDR is when I had that added to BL3, it was at the end of its support life,” wrote Timmins. “I don’t want to add a feature to the start of BL4 that kind of devalues our amazing loot. We’re starting with Take as Junk for now.”

Borderlands 4 is slated to get quite a few things in the form of post-launch updates once the title is finally out on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch 2. Studio head Randy Pitchford had taken to social media to write about being excited to bring DLC to the game, while also not having “any paid early access stuff”.

“I am so stoked that Borderlands 4 is $69.99 and not $80,” wrote Pitchford. “I am so stoked we’re not doing any paid early access stuff and moved the date earlier to Sept 12. I am stoked that we are planning a TON of awesome DLC.”

As for what exactly the post-launch DLC for Borderlands 4 will include, Gearbox is yet to reveal any details. However, looking at the various editions of the title available for pre-order does provide some hints, with new missions, story content, and vehicles being some of the planned DLC releases.
