With the recent release of RPG Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, the game has accidentally ended up fighting for attention against fellow recent release, The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered. Despite the two role-playing games duking it out against each other for the time and mindshare of players, voice actor Ben Starr believes that both games can peacefully exist alongside on another.
Starr, who voices Verso in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, and has previously voiced Final Fantasy 16 protagonist Clive Rosfield, spoke to GameSpot about the diversity in the modern gaming landscape. With the recent release of titles Oblivion Remastered, Blue Prince, and now Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, as well as upcoming games like DOOM: The Dark Ages, players have plenty of options.
“I think when it comes to that, one thing that we can absolutely speak to is how exciting it is that we’re in 2025–a year that, whatever your gaming tastes, whether you’re obsessed with Blue Prince, whether you’re obsessed with Oblivion, whether you’re excited for DOOM: The Dark Ages, whether you’re excited for Clair Obscur, you have so much diversity to explore,” he said.
The fact that Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a brand new, completely original game that is neither a sequel nor an adaptation also certainly helps. Both games coming out within just a few days of each other, according to Starr, only means that players have more options for the kinds of games they would like to play.
“I think Expedition 33 is this amazing new IP that doesn’t come along very often,” said Starr. “You’ve got two ends of the spectrum. You’ve got the remake of the masterpiece that is Oblivion, the juggernaut that is Oblivion, and you’ve got this new IP that is Expedition 33, and hopefully they can exist alongside each other.”
Speaking about both titles existing alongside each other at the same time, Starr also emphasises the quality of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, saying that the title “isn’t going anywhere.”
“I know that they can, because there is so much space in the industry to enjoy it,” he said. “This game isn’t going anywhere. This game is on Game Pass. Download it, put it on your console, and experience it when you get there. Genuinely, what a great year for videogames.”
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 just came out on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. Leading up to its release, the game got a trailer earlier this month that focused on showcasing its world and lore. The central focus of the trailer was the city of Lumiere. Mysteriously separated from the main continent a few decades ago, the event coincided with the emergence of the Paintress.
For more details about the turn-based RPG, check out our review, where we gave it a score of 9 out of 10. In our review, we praised several aspects of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, including its visuals, combat, and strong cast. We did, however, have criticisms about technical issues, such as graphical pop-ins in the PS5 version of the game, as well as issues with lip-syncing.
