Control Dev Diary Talks About Jesse’s Past, Introducing The Story

Remedy Entertainment talks about building the world first before deciding on the stories it should have.

Remedy Entertainment has released the first in a series of developer diaries for its upcoming supernatural action game Control. Players assume the role of Jesse as she explores the headquarters of the Federal Bureau of Control (aka “The Oldest House”) while combating the mysterious Hiss. In the first dev diary, creative director Sam Lake and other Remedy developers open up about the story and Jesse’s character.

For Remedy, the objective with Control was to build a world that the developer wanted to see. It then looked into the different stories and experiences that it wanted to have. To that end, Jesse serves as an outsider, introducing both her and the player to the world together. Jesse apparently has a dark secret and seeks answers to a mystery she witnessed as a child.

Described as “driven, intuitive, haunted and compassionate”, Jesse’s emotions will become more apparent as she battles her way through The Oldest House. Control is slated to release in 2019 for Xbox One, PS4 and PC. It’s not a totally linear experience – Lake described the world as more “open-ended” and Metroidvania-like. “You are unlocking the world as you go and discovering new places,” he said. This will include other characters who may have side quests to complete.
