Cyberpunk 2077’s Level Designer Says First-Person Focus Is The Right Choice For The Game

Max Pears thinks it adds a lot to the story CDPR are trying to tell.

It’s overselling it to say it’s been a “controversy” per say, but not everyone is super happy about the fact that Cyberpunk 2077 will be first person. Not only does it follow the company’s highly successful The Witcher 3, which was third person, it also features a robust character creation that has a lot of options and has been expanded greatly after fan feedback. So it’s somewhat understandable that some people would like to see their character a lot more than we apparently will. But the Level Designer for the game says the first person focus is the right move for what developer CD Projekt RED is trying to do.

Speaking with VGC, Max Pears says he understands why some people aren’t a fan of the move, but assures people that a lot of thought went into the decision. He thinks that it gives players a stronger feeling its their game and their character.

“I hope people understand that we have thought about this and there is logic to our process,” he said. “We’ve not just thrown this in randomly: there is a lot of thought that’s gone into it.

“In last year’s demo you saw the interactive dialogue system, where somebody pulled a gun on your face. I don’t think you would necessarily get that same impact in third-person.

“It’s moments like that which make it feel like it’s your story and your character.”

Well, it is what it, but with the upcoming multiplayer mode maybe we’ll get a chance to show off our custom characters in that way. Cyberpunk 2077 releases April 16th 2020 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC and Stadia.
