Less Compelling Story Compared to Lore
Ask anyone about Destiny’s story when the game first launched and you’ll hear a number of complaints about the story-telling. Certain plot elements aren’t explained at all. Plenty of events don’t make sense. We know pretty much nothing about the races we’re fighting aside from some all-encompassing concept of “The Darkness”. Of course, the dedicated fans of the game will scoff and tell you to read the lore for all the answers (and trust us, all the answers are not there by a long shot). But the question remains – why did Bungie tell so much better stories in its lore than it did in the main game?
Fast forward to The Taken King which not only has a better story but actually creates and revisits intriguing subplots, fleshing them out and giving life to the characters, events and settings around us. Sure, the Book of Sorrows is a better story overall but as lore, it’s meant to add on to the main story rather than substitute for it. Thankfully, there’s enough meat in the plot for The Taken King that even those without knowledge of the lore will find enough to like.
Even if there are still so many unexplained plot holes to this point, there is still some satisfaction to knowing that The Taken King had a beginning, middle and end to it. Future expansions should take heed of this rather than telling us to destroy Crota but not really and head into the Hellmouth or capture Skolas only to be invited into prison to slaughter him because…reasons?
