Divinity: Original Sin is an upcoming Fantasy Role Playing Game (FRPG) that is currently in development and set to be published by Belgian game developers, Larian Studios (Divinity: Dragon Commander and Divinity II: Flames of Vengeance).

Divinity: Original Sin is the result of a KickStarter crowd funding campaign which raised in excess of $1,000,000. The title will be running on an inhouse engine (internally developed) and is set to release on Windows, OS X and Linux via digital download. A retail version will also be made available.

Development

There is no specific date available for the beginning of the development period for Divinity: Original Sin, but what we do know is that the game was originally set to release at some time between October and November of 2013. This is one of the rare opportunities for Larian Studios where they got to make a turn based game. They had intended to do this before with other titles, but the publishers that they were working with at the time would always prevent this and stop them from doing so. This has since been changed to a somewhat later date of February 28th of 2013. This is because although the game was originally intended to release on PC and Mac devices at the same time, the decision was made to make a Linux compatible version which, according to developers would not be difficult.

Both Mac and Linux versions were eventually delayed so that a focus on gameplay could be adopted, presumably to ensure a quality product upon launch. When the Linux and Mac versions are completed and ready for release, anyone with a PC version of the game will be entitled to a free copy of the game on both Mac and Linux systems. The game is currently localized for various regions, including: English, French, German, Polish and Russian. Additional translations and localizations may be added at a later date. This will likely be decided by sales numbers which are expected to be high.

While Divinity: Original Sin was still in development, a KickStarter crowd funding campaign was started on March 27th of 2013. This was done with the intent of securing more funding to expand the content in the game and increase the level of interactivity of the game’s world. The KickStarter campaign reached its goal on April 23th of 2013 raising over one million dollars of additional funds once all pledges (including those made via PayPal) were taken into consideration.

Gameplay

Divinity: Original Sin is a role playing game concerning two main heroes, one of which is a warrior previously bound in chains for unknown reasons, and a female heroine that has been resurrected. Although it’s the next entry into the Divinity universe and RPG series, it’s actually a prequel to Divine Divinity, the 2002 PC based RPG from Larian Studios. The game is played through the use of a turn based combat mechanic that will employ both single and multiplayer as well as “highly interactive world”.

The game will also ship with an in depth and fully featured game editor (commonly known as a modding suite) that the game was built on. This will allow players to not only create their own adventures to play alone or with friends, but to post these adventures and quests  online as a means to extend the game’s replay factor, similar to the Skyrim Modding community and its user created content that greatly extends the game.

Characters

Characters in Divinity: Original Sin are created by the player at the beginning of the game. It’s up to the player to choose the characters appearance and tune their starting skills by allocating points to various statistical attributes that will influence the characters abilities. While we don’t know much about the characters story arc itself, it has been mentioned that character development is somewhat open to player input, “Character development follows the philosophy of the game: it’s very free.”

Story

Currently, there are no details surrounding the plot of Divinity: Original Sin. To quote the PR team, “The title will become clear as you play through the main story.”

Classes

There are no predefined classes in Divinity: Original Sin, as mentioned in an FAQ, “Just like other Divinity games, Divinity Original Sin is classless.” This is a knock on effect of the players ability to allocate points as they see fit to enhance their character. There are however, six schools. Four of which are magic based: Earth, Wind, Water and Fire. We don’t know yet what the others may be.

Note: This wiki will be updated once we have more information about the game.
