“Don’t Think For a Second We’re Gonna Remove the Sauce,” Says Marathon UI Designer About its Look

However, Bungie's Elliot Gray acknowledges there's "plenty of work we can and will do" to respond to UI feedback from players.

Marathon’s Server Slam officially ended yesterday, and Bungie has acknowledged extensive feedback about its performance, PvP frequency, and much more. However, if there’s one thing that’s seemingly attracted the most attention, it’s the “fontslop” user interface. Depending on your preference, it’s either harsh on the eyes or cool in its own trippy way.

Regardless, it’s here to stay, as UI designer Elliot Gray (who also claims to be a “fontslop merchant”) clarified on Twitter that, “Don’t think for a second that we’re gonna remove the SAUCE from the UI.”

However, he acknowledged that there’s still “plenty of work we can and will do as a team to respond to player feedback about inventory management, navigation, density of info, etc.” Whether that means it will address issues with being unable to distinguish between two items with similar icons and vastly differing stats, or the lack of weapon comparisons, remains to be seen.

And even if it does, you likely won’t see those changes at launch. Marathon is available on March 5th for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC, with Bungie clarifying that any UI iterations will occur after. It will subsequently reveal timelines for the same later, so stay tuned.

It should also provide more information on Season 1. All we know is that it’s available shortly after (if not on the same day as) launch, and includes two new maps: Outpost and Cryo Archive. The latter is an end-game zone set on the UESC Marathon, and given the number of bots that have been attacking on Tau Ceti IV, you can likely expect a challenge. Ranked Mode is also coming, though Bungie hasn’t clarified how it will work.
