Dying Light 2 Stay Human’s First Couple of Expansions Won’t Stray Too Far from The City

"They are connected to what’s happening in the city and start in the city of Villedor, it’s all broadly the same area," says lead designer Tymon Smektala.

Prolonged, consistent post-launch support is one of several things that Techland excels at, and just like its predecessor, Dying Light 2 Stay Human is going to benefit from that, with the developer having promised at least five years of support for the open world action RPG. A big part of that will, of course, be big expansions, but what sort of a trajectory will that follow? The original Dying Light saw some pretty over-the-top and high-flying expansions in its later years, but will Dying Light 2 Stay Human kick off its post-launch support on that foot, or will it be more grounded to begin with?

Lead designer Tymon Smektala recently discussed the same while speaking with VG247, and said that Dying Light 2 Stay Human’s first couple of expansions will be rather grounded, so you shouldn’t expect to head into space or anything like that… for now, at least.

“Don’t expect that [the DLC] will take you to space or something like that,” Smektala said. “That would maybe happen in year 3 or 4.”

Promptly, he clarified: “Our PR lady is looking at me funny for saying this because in other interviews I’ve said something hypothetically about Dying Light 3, but the news headlines were ‘Dying Light 3 confirmed’, so I’m not confirming that we will take players to space or take players to Atlantis.”

Smektala went on to elaborated that Dying Light 2’s first couple of expansions will start off in Villedor, a.k.a. The City, which is the base game’s setting. Though the two expansions will eventually move away into their own new areas, both will still be quite close to The City.

“For DLC 1 and 2 they are different locations, but they’re all within the same universe, the same headspace,” he said. “They are connected to what’s happening in the city and start in the city of Villedor, it’s all broadly the same area. Those are new locations.”

“We have 5 years of content in front of us with big steps defined that will take us to where we want to be in 5 years,” Smektala added. “I think in those 5 years the game will have grown to be really huge. I think that’s all I can reveal at this point. The game will definitely grow to get more locations and more content but it’s too early to talk about specifics. We don’t want to promise something and then it takes on a new life of its own and gets taken out of context.”

Little is known about Dying Light 2’s first expansion so far. Smektala previous said it will be set “sideways to the main events” of the base game rather than afterward, while recently, it was confirmed that it is now set to launch sometime in September.

Dying Light 2 Stay Human is available on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, Xbox One, and PC, and is set to launch as a cloud-exclusive release on the Nintendo Switch sometime this year. You can read our review of the game through here.
