Valve’s online digital platform Steam has announced its top best-selling titles for 2016 based on gross revenue generated throughout the year. Games have been divided in tiers (Platinum, Gold and so on) so while we don’t know the outright best-selling game of 2016, it does offer an idea of which games performed better.
In the Platinum category, there’s Dark Souls 3, Fallout 4, No Man’s Sky, Tom Clancy’s The Division, Total War: Warhammer, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Rocket League, XCOM 2 and Grand Theft Auto 5. Games like Counter-Strike: GO and Dota 2, despite their age, boast strong engagement thanks to constant cosmetic additions via micro-transactions. This would explain their high revenue throughout the year.
Meanwhile, in the Gold category, titles like Rainbow Six: Siege, DOOM, ARK: Survival Evolved, Warframe (again with its micro-transactions), Stellaris, Stardew Valley and Rise of the Tomb Raider have made their mark. You can check out the full list of titles here to see how your favourites fared.
