2023 is looking like it’s going to be a big year for the already-massive Final Fantasy 14, not just because the MMORPG is set to receive its fifth expansion in the form of Dawntrail (which launches in the Summer), but also because it’s finally releasing for Xbox Series X/S. Ahead of the port’s launch later in the year, an open beta is set to kick off later this month, though where the full game is concerned, Square Enix has revealed a requirement that could prove unpopular among fans.
Square Enix has announced that the full version of Final Fantasy 14 will not be playable on Xbox Series X/S unless you are subscribed to Game Pass (whether that’s Core, its standard tier, or Ultimate). Given the fact that the game is already requires its own subscription, the additional monetary requirement is likely to raise eyebrows, especially since on PS5 and PS4, the MMORPG does not require a PlayStation Plus subscription.
That said, Square Enix says the game’s aforementioned upcoming beta (and its free trial version) won’t require a Game Pass subscription.
Final Fantasy 14’s open beta kicks off for Xbox Series X/S on February 21, with a full release scheduled for Spring.
