Square Enix’s Final Fantasy 15 has achieved a new record of sorts for the franchise. According to industry analyst Benji-Sales on Twitter, the title has shipped 8.9 million units worldwide since release. This makes it the third best selling mainline title with Final Fantasy 7 and Final Fantasy 10 leading the pack.
Final Fantasy 15 launched in November 2016 but didn’t have the smoothest development period. It initially began development as Final Fantasy Versus 13 for the PS3 but faced numerous issues with its direction, engine and gameplay. As time went on, Final Fantasy Type-0 director Hajime Tabata would take over for Tetsuya Nomura and help the project reach completion.

The game has been updated with a strong amount of updates and DLC since launch, the last being Episode Ardyn which explores the story from the antagonist’s perspective. Final Fantasy 15 Windows Edition and Episode Ardyn are currently 50 percent off for the Steam Winter Sale so it might be worth checking out.

Amazing performance for the genre, on it's way to 9+ million lifetime. Will be interesting to see if it can hit 10m+ pic.twitter.com/JeS6MGvHPX
