Final Fantasy 16 Sells Over 3 Million Units Worldwide

Square Enix's eagerly-awaited action RPG was released on June 22nd, exclusively for PS5, and has received critical acclaim.

Less than a week after launch, Square Enix has announced (via Gamer.ne.jp) that Final Fantasy 16 has sold over three million units worldwide on PS5. The figure includes physical units shipped and digital downloads. By comparison, Final Fantasy 15 shipped five million units in its first 24 hours, though it released for two consoles.

Developed by Creative Business Unit 3, with Naoki Yoshida of Final Fantasy 14 fame as producer, Final Fantasy 16 takes place in Valisthea. The various realms are at war, seeking to covet the Mothercrystals and their blessings. As Clive Rosfield, players embark on a journey to find the second Eikon of Fire, responsible for a past tragedy.

Along the way, they’ll meet various allies, including Cidolfus Telamon, Jill Warrick (Clive’s childhood friend) and Torgal, a loyal hound. Combat is real-time instead of turn-based, and Clive wields various skills from different Eikons to slay foes. Final Fantasy 16 has received critical acclaim for its story-telling, characters and combat, even if Performance Mode leaves something to be desired. Check out our review for more details.
