Out of nowhere, Square Enix has released a ten-minute gameplay overview trailer for Forspoken. Developed by Luminous Productions, the open-world action RPG is about Frey Holland, a New Yorker who’s mysteriously transported to Athia. Though she can wield magic, the world is treacherous thanks to the corruption-spreading Break and despotic Tantas.

In the trailer, we see Cipal, the last haven in Athia. Frey can encounter various NPCs who give quests or information, and can even trade. One quest sees her venturing outside of the city to Praenost to find some blacksmithing tools, fending off enemies with magic and parkouring seamlessly all over.

Along with treasure chests with items for crafting and trading, she’ll also find Mana pools which can unlock new spells if enough are collected. Various belfries can be scanned with Cuff to reveal other points of interest nearby. Exploration is a big part of the experience as Frey can find experience points, Athian lore, new gear and stat increases.

There are also Pilgrim’s Refuges which allow for resting, upgrading gear and crafting healing items. In Avoalet, Frey ventures into the depths where the Break is stronger. Combat and movement seem a lot smoother than in previous showings. Plus, it seems that there’s a magical cat companion that can accompany Frey on her journey.

Forspoken is out on January 24th, 2023 for PS5 and PC, and pre-orders are now available. Those who pre-order digitally on consoles will receive a Crafting Starter Kit, No Limits Cloak, Trigger Happy Nails, and a Symbol Combo Necklace. Stay tuned for more gameplay in the coming months.
