War is hell – and in God of War: Ascension, it’s also hellaciously fun.

The upcoming PS3 title from SCE Santa Monica does what previous titles haven’t with its new multiplayer mode, and in a new dev diary for the same, the developer looks at the creation and implementation of ideas that went into the game’s bloody PvP battles.

God of War: Ascension’s multiplayer will support up to 8 players, split into either even teams of four or working alone once they pledge allegiance to one of four deities – Zeus, Hades, Ares and Poseidon – to gain unique abilities. Of course, players can also upgrade their characters using weapons and XP earned from battles.

Though there is Capture the Flag and Deathmatch, God of War: Ascension is banking on the Domination-style Favour of the Gods mode to win players over. For those interested and invested in Playstation Plus, they can gain access to the multiplayer beta here.

God of War: Ascension is currently scheduled for a March 12th release in North America and March 13th in Europe.
