This one’s probably not going to affect you at all if you’re going to buy a digital edition of Grand Theft Auto 6. However, a couple of prominent retailers are taking a stand against Rockstar’s decision to include a code inside physical versions rather than a disc.
We’re kind of on the fence about this one, though. It does make sense from Rockstar’s point of view to take every possible measure to prevent further leaks, but given that hefty price tag, it also makes sense to give us the chance to recoup some of our cash once we’re done playing the game, however long that may take.
Video Games Plus in North America, a chain with over three decades of selling games under its belt, has confirmed not stocking it without a disc, a policy it has long held in a shifting landscape surrounding the ownership of video games.
“Based on the information currently available, the physical release of Grand Theft Auto 6 for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X is expected to be a code-in-box product. As a result, VGP will not be offering it for sale under our current company policy.”
Similarly, Loot Box Gaming has taken the same stance, insisting on the presence of a physical disk before it begins stocking physical copies for the game’s launch.
These announcements will likely get a fair bit of support from those who don’t approve of physical copies coming with a code to download the game in question. But it’s troubling to know that you might not get to play one of modern gaming’s biggest releases on the day it launches, thanks to factors outside of your control.
It’s going to be interesting to see if Rockstar shifts its position or manages to turn things around, but we wouldn’t hold our breath. Stay tuned for updates regardless.
