Arrowhead Studios’ Helldivers 2 has received some new gameplay and details, with creative director and studio CEO Johan Pilestedt breaking down the different elements. It’s a co-op title with third-person shooting instead of an overhead perspective, but Helldivers 2 has quirks and twists that can make it downright brutal.
First are the Stratagems. These are tools activated with button inputs and range from airstrikes and Hellpods to stronger weapons. Choosing the right Stratagem is the key to success. For example, if a Terminid Charger is causing problems, bring in an AT-48 Recoilless Rifle or AC-8 Autocannon to break through their armor.
You can also summon a shield generator for defensive purposes and supply backpacks. Each squad member can equip different Stratagems, so it’s important to coordinate. Of course, this being Helldivers 2, friendly fire is enabled, and allies can die from stray gunfire or Stratagems that land on them in battle. Fortunately, by using the Reinforce Stratagem, you can bring in a new Helldiver who can use the weapons from the deceased one.
With cooperative and optional objectives, there’s plenty to do in a single map. Helldivers 2 launches this year for PS5 and PC, so stay tuned for more details in the coming months.
