The Nihilanth enslaved the Vortigaunts
Many of you wonder why the Vortigaunts attacked you in Half Life, but were so friendly in Half Life 2. Well in Half Life after the resonance cascade occurred, the Nihilanth enslaved the Vortigaunts which as you could see there were shackles of sorts on the Vortigaunts wrists. However in Half Life 2 the Vortigaunts shackles are gone and they are very indebted to you for freeing them and killing their master. Hence many Vortigaunts hold freeman in very high esteem.
