Insomniac Games Has Made Just $567 off Sunset Overdrive

No, not $567,000. The studio has made just over five hundred dollars off the game, which released for Xbox One in 2014.

Insomniac Games has enjoyed commercial success on a level it had never seen before with its Marvel’s Spider-Man games, but not all of its titles in the last decade or so have seen eye-watering sales. In fact, specifically where Sunset Overdrive is concerned, the money the studio has made off it is quite negligible, to say the least.

Following a recent large-scale ransomware leak, an internal Insomniac Games document emerged online, listing sales figures for a number of past Insomniac titles. According to that document, which was shared by a user on ResetEraSunset Overdrive has sold just under 1.9 million units since it released for Xbox One in 2014, before coming to PC in 2018.

The game had a budget of $42.6 million, against which it brought in net sales of $49.7 million, with each unit sold bringing in $26 on average. That’s a pretty small margin as it is, but the document also reveals that Insomniac’s share of profits from the game amounts to just $567. No, not $567,000. Just five hundred and sixty-seven dollars.

When Insomniac Games was acquired by Sony in 2019, Sony stated that it owned the rights to all previous titles developed by the studio, presumably including Sunset Overdrive. Though the company itself has been uncertain about a potential revival for the franchise, Insomniac itself has expressed interest.

Meanwhile, the recent Insomniac ransomware leak has revealed that another one of the studio’s titles (and a much more recent one) also underperformed commercially- Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart has sold 2.2 million units, incurring a loss of $8 million. At the same time, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales has sold over 10.2 million units, so there’s that.
