Thatgamecompany co-founder Jenova Chen recently spoke to Polygon about the development behind Journey, their award-winning adventure title on the PS3, and proving to those studying video game design that commercially successful art games are possible.
He’s not so eager to point to the development of Journey for that though. “”I wouldn’t say that the development of Journey was a successful example of game development. We bankrupted the company.” While received favourably and supported by Sony during its delay, Chen wants the company’s next game to be on more than one platform.
It’s not just about commercial success, but proving that an artistic game can earn it. “I run into a lot of lost and frustrated students who study games to work on great art, but then find there is no place for them. I feel responsible for them because I showed them that is possible, but there is no place for them.”
Like Journey, the company’s next game will focus on connection between but players but unlike Journey, “I think we are trying to do one level above that with this game.”
