Following Double Fine Productions having gone fully independent after Xbox’s mass layoffs in July, it looks like the developer is looking forward to releasing its games on more platforms. PlayStation Trophy tracking website Exophase has a new listing for Keeper, with all of its in-game Trophies, indicating that the unique adventure game is making its way to PS5.
Keeper was originally released on PC and Xbox Series X/S back in October 2025, and since then, Double Fine has moved on to work on its other projects. However, the title was quite well received, at least among critics. However, its bizarre visual style and general concept may have led to it not getting a larger audience at the time.
The title was unveiled back in June 2025 with a trailer that showed how its story would revolve around the unlikely friendship between a bird and a sentient decrepit lighthouse. Taking place long after humanity has seemingly ceased existing, the title puts players in the role of the lighthouse and gives them a single goal: get to the center of the island.
The lighthouse isn’t alone, however; a bird accompanies it. And while the massive lighthouse can certainly accomplish many things on its own, it needs to rely on the bird to interact with fine machinery and other delicate mechanisms that might get wrecked if the lighthouse tries to clumsily push a button.
In our review, we gave Keeper a score of 8 out of 10 thanks to its unique art direction, wordless narrative, and intriguing puzzle mechanics. However, we also criticized the title for its limited character interactions and linear puzzle design.
As for Double Fine itself, the studio was able to buy back its independence from Microsoft. However, it couldn’t avoid some sacrifice, and as a result, had to undergo layoffs that affected 23 of its employees. In a statement, studio founder Tim Schafer said that “Only the survival of our studio would ever make us consider such a painful action. Our transition to becoming an independent company also means becoming a size that we can sustain.”
With reports indicating that the studio had a headcount of around 90 employees, the layoffs amounted to a workforce reduction of around 25.6 percent. In a statement, Xbox congratulated Double Fine for once more becoming a fully independent studio that has ownership of its IP.
“Double Fine fully returned to independent management earlier this week, with their IP, catalog, and runway for their next games. As they begin their next chapter as an independent studio, we look forward to seeing what they create next.”
The studio had followed up the release of Keeper with its multiplayer title Kiln earlier this year. Support for the game has continued, and Double Fine even announced a price cut, bringing the standard edition of the game down to $7.99, and a Fired Up Edition is priced at $9.99.
Double Fine has also announced that it is returning to its Amnesia Fortnight game jam, which involves many developers in the studio working together on rough ideas that can be quickly developed into prototypes. The most acclaimed of these go on to be developed into full games. Examples of this happening in the past include Costume Quest and Headlander.
