The upcoming LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight has been confirmed to be adapting stories from throughout the Batman mythos, ranging from the comics to even movies and games. Strategic director for TT Games, Johnathan Smith, revealed the reasons behind the studio’s decision to adapt these stories for the upcoming title in an interview with GamesRadar.
In the interview, Smith spoke about TT Games wanting to pay homage to iconic moments from various Batman stories while still sprinkling in the humour that the studio’s titles are known for. It ultimately came down to how the studio has “drawn upon decades of reference material and fantastic stories about Batman in movies, TV shows, comics and game, and brought them all together into one definitive, essential, epic story of Batman.”
“So it’s a fusion of all those iconic moments that you remember, laced and woven with deep cut references and our own humorous jokes, to bring the experience of becoming the Dark Knight to life for players,” said Smith. “We draw upon them all, and we bring them together, and then we create one story that unifies and is essential.”
Smith also spoke about the broad variety of Batman-based fiction that TT Games gets to drawn from, ranging from Rocksteady’s series of Batman: Arkham titles, to the reveal trailer even including musical motifs from the critically-acclaimed Batman: The Animated Series. Even the Gamescom 2025 demo for LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight tapped into classic stories from the comics, including giving us hints about Joker’s origin story by tapping into the 1989 Batman movie. With all of this, Smith noted that the studio wants to create a Batman experience that hasn’t really been done before.
“We feel it’s a huge privilege,” Smith explained. “We feel we’ve got the richest amount of material to draw from, and we are so excited that no one’s ever put all those pieces together in one experience with a video game. We can do that in a way that no one’s ever seen or experienced before, with new technology and a really immersive Gotham city, with mechanics that progress the player experience to match the emotional journey of the character.”
LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight was announced during Gamescom, and is currently in development for PC, PS5, Xbox series X/S and Nintendo Switch 2. Among the details that have been revealed for the game so far include the fact that there will be seven playable characters in the game, including iconic characters like Jim Gordon, Robin, Batgirl, Catwoman, Talia al Ghul and Nightwing accompanying Batman on various missions.
The studio has also confirmed that players will get to explore Gotham City as an open-world environment, giving players the chance to visit iconic locations from the Batman lore, from the Gotham Botanical Gardens to Arkham Asylum, Wayne Tower, and Ace Chemicals.
Sticking to its LEGO game tradition, TT Games has also confirmed that LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight will feature co-op. However, in an FAQ for the upcoming title, the studio has also stated that co-op will be limited to local multiplayer only, with no options for online co-op available.
