While LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight was announced recently – earlier this week – some gameplay has now popped up of the first mission of the game. The video, which you can check out below, comes courtesy of GameSpot, and gives us a good look at the kind of stealth and action gameplay you can expect from the upcoming title.
While things start off by setting the scene with a conversation between Batman and Jim Gordon, things take a turn when Red Hood’s cronies come in to load up some shipments. Along with the trademark sense of comedy you would expect from a LEGO title developed by TT Games, we also get to see how much the upcoming title has been influenced by Rocksteady’s Batman: Arkham series in terms of gameplay.
As Batman, players will have plenty of options to skulk around in the shadows as they stealthily take down enemies one by one. There are also puzzles to be solved that involve analyising the various things that the Red Hood gang has been smuggling. While these puzzles are still fairly simplistic, they still manage to tap into similar vibes of the Arkham games. Batman is also able to glide around the level by using his cape to get to new areas more quickly.
Combat is also showcased, and seems to make use of a similar rhythm-based system of the Arkham series. Both Batman and Gordon are playable in these segments, and players can use long combo strings to take down hordes of gang members, while also countering their attacks. Gadgets can also be used to make taking down bigger groups of enemies easier.
The level seemingly caps off with a confrontation against Red Hood One, after which Batman and Gordon have to chase the leader of the Red Hood Gang down while also dealing with environmental hazards as well as gang members that had been left behind. Finishing off the level is an epic aerial chase sequence as Batman and Gordon glide towards Red Hood One who is trying to escape on a zipline. Red Hood One meets his unfortunate end, however, when he ultimately falls into a vat of strange chemicals.
As the announcement trailer for LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight revealed, the title will tell its own original story while also blending in locations and stories from throughout the Batman universe. This includes several movies starring the superhero, from the 1989 Batman all the way to Christopher Nolan’s trilogy that started with Batman Begins and ended with The Dark Knight Rises.
LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight is slated for release in 2026, and will be coming to PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2. The game is set to feature seven different playable characters, including Robin, Batgirl, Catwoman, Nightwing, and even Talia al Ghul. The world of the game will be an open one, with players free to explore various landmarks from across Gotham City. The studio has also confirmed that the game will not feature online co-op. Rather, co-op will be limited to local only.
