Bungie’s Marathon recently revealed its gameplay to the world, showcasing the sci-fi extraction shooter and its mechanics (alongside a snazzy cinematic short). While impressions range from excited to skeptical, several media outlets and content creators went hands-on with its alpha and revealed new details, like the launch content.

It’s confirmed that Marathon will arrive with Season 1 – with director Joe Ziegler discussing the creation of “adventures” for players to embark on. However, many outlets, including GameSpot, confirmed it would launch with three maps. A fourth will become available shortly after. There will also be six playable Runners at launch, with four revealed thus far – head here for more details.

The narrative is currently “very vague in its nature and unclear in its implementation.” Meanwhile, the character progression didn’t “yet show signs of offering a meaningful sense of growth.” Again, these are alpha build impressions, so time will tell if these aspects are available at launch.

Marathon will launch for Xbox Series X/S, PS5 and PC on September 23rd, with the closed alpha starting on April 23rd.
