Marvel’s Avengers has been the recipient of a fair amount of criticism since its reveal at E3 this year, and among the many things that audiences have found lacking in the game is the design of the titular protagonists, who, according to many, look like off-brand knockoffs of their portrayals seen in the MCU movies.
It’s something that those involved with the game have previously defended, with developers Crystal Dynamics themselves saying that they’re not planning on changing the core designs of the five main characters anytime soon- but that doesn’t mean they won’t change at all. Speaking with PCGamesN, the developers said that players will continue to see little tweaks in those designs, as well as other aspects of the game, from now even up until the post-launch period.
“Everything about the game is going to continue to change as we polish, as we approach launch right now, but things that we’ve shown both at E3 and here, it’s all been pre-alpha,” said Avengers editorial director Casey Lynch. “There’ll be changes to everything from the characters to a lot of what you see.”
A Square Enix representative also spoke on the matter, giving clarifications regarding what exactly Lynch means. “By changes, we’re talking about polish,” said the rep. “What we’re doing is we are continuing to add detail to their character models, we’re improving the lighting, we’re improving the skin shading. So, what you’re hopefully seeing is the characters continuing to look better as we get closer to launch. But in terms of changing character designs, that’s not currently what we’re looking at.”
Marvel’s Avengers is out on May 15, 2020 for the PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Stadia. Nearly 20 minutes of gameplay footage from the game were recently released- check it out through here.
