Marvel's Avengers

Marvel’s Avengers finally got its big unveiling at Square Enix’s E3 press conference the other day, and it looked very familiar to fans. All the faces that’s come to be household names due to the MCU films were present with plenty of explosions, quips and threats that we’ve come to expect. There’s still some lingering questions about the project, however. We know it’s a co-op experience, but how exactly does that work? Well, now we have a better idea as some aspects of the multiplayer have been detailed by the developer.

While talking with Eurogamer, Lead Designer Philippe Therien detailed many aspects of the game such as the multiplayer, monetization and whether the game was open world or not. When talking about the multiplayer, he was asked if the event depicted in the reveal trailer, called “A-Day” in the narrative, would be the standard way multiplayer would go and if the levels were designed for four players in mind. He said that it was, but also noted that there would be sections that would see players being left to their own accord.

“We’ve got a cool mix of melee and ranged combat going on, some characters that only work one type or the other. Because we have both multiplayer and campaign you’ll see cases where sometimes the experience is more directed, or some places you’ll just be left to your own devices and left to work out what to do. The Avengers go to many different places in this game, it varies where you’re at.”

When asked about whether or not people could share characters, however, he said that wasn’t in the cards. So if you have three friends and want to make a team of Captain Americas, you are out of luck.

“You have to play as different characters while online. The Avengers all have different skills and talents and we want people to have a fully-fleshed out team. It wouldn’t be the Avengers otherwise.”

Marvel’s Avengers will release for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Stadia May 15th, 2020.
