After announcing that Marvel’s Spider-Man would have a remastered release on PS5 as part of an Ultimate Edition bundle, many current-gen owners wondered about an upgrade. Unfortunately, as the rumors indicated, there won’t be a free PS4 to PS5 upgrade. This was recently confirmed by Sony in a statement to Kotaku.

It stated, “Marvel’s Spider-Man: Remastered is an enhanced version of Marvel’s Spider-Man, and is included as part of Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales Ultimate Edition for the PlayStation 5. In addition, players who purchase Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales on PlayStation 4 can upgrade at no additional cost to the PS5 version of Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales and can take advantage of a paid-upgrade to download Marvel’s Spider-Man: Remastered.”

What if you just want to buy the remaster on PS5? That’s not possible either, at least for the foreseeable future. “There are no plans currently to offer Marvel’s-Spider-Man: Remastered as a standalone. Players with a copy of Marvel’s Spider-Man for PS4 can purchase Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales Ultimate Edition to experience Marvel’s Spider-Man: Remastered on PS5. Marvel’s Spider-Man for PS4 also will be backwards compatible on PS5,” said the publisher.

So essentially, if you want to play Marvel’s Spider-Man: Remastered on PS5, you must spend $70 to acquire the Ultimate Edition for Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales. Though the PS5 will offer improved performance for the PS4 version via backwards compatibility, it won’t support ray-tracing and other significant graphical improvements. Whether Sony will change its plans in the coming days or not remains to be seen.

Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales is slated to launch on November 12th, the same day as the PS5. It’s a standalone title but on a scale akin to Uncharted: The Lost Legacy. Check out the most recent gameplay footage here.
