Even as Insomniac Games reveals more about Marvel’s Wolverine than ever before, right down to New Game Plus being available on day one, a certain pall hangs over it. Of course, we’re talking about PlayStation’s decision to stop producing discs for new games from January 2028 onwards.
If it’s any comfort, however, Marvel’s Wolverine will have a physical disc at launch. And thankfully, it isn’t cosmetic – project director Jess Reiner-Reed told Eurogamer that the game is fully playable.
“Marvel’s Wolverine will come out in digital and physical [versions], and the game will be fully playable on the disc when you purchase it.” That said, there will be a day-one patch, as is always the case for games nowadays, and you’re encouraged to download it.
“We want people or encourage people to download that day-one patch because we are right now working on – or we’re continuing over the next few months before release – to work on polish and some bug fixing.”
Head of technology Mike Fitzgerald chimed in to encourage the same. “I would say we’re perfectionists. We take every minute we can get to just tweak this little thing, make everything a little bit better – we’re gonna squeeze as much out of it as we can. And so if players download that patch, they get that little bit of extra time.”
Marvel’s Wolverine launches on September 15th for PS5, and thus far, it’s only looked better with each reveal. Rather than pursuing an origin story, Insomniac is focusing on a world without X-Men, where mutants are considered outsiders and typically ostracized. Logan is trying to find his way, anger management issues and all, and Bolivar Trask kidnapping them for his experiments doesn’t help.
Aside from the main story, players can also engage in Nightmare Doors, optional trials that delve into Wolverine’s mind, though the rewards for the same remain to be disclosed. If you’re keen on replaying in New Game Plus, there will be Adaptations that can seemingly increase the difficulty or unlock all kinds of ways to wreak further havoc.
