From its first gameplay reveal, Insomniac Games made it clear that Marvel’s Wolverine is a linear action-adventure title, a stark contrast to the open-world Spider-Man series. While many welcome the change in pace, there are worries about longevity and replay value.
Senior project director Jess Reiner-Reed reiterated to IGN that this is a “story-driven adventure. Logan is pulled through uncovering these mysteries of his past.” However, players can go “off the beaten path.”
It could be discovering materials for unlocking new suits or collecting bottles for progression. However, there are also Nightmare Doors, described as “manifestations of the horrible things happening in Logan’s mind. There’s many of those throughout the game with different types of trials.” So if you were wondering about that strange door in the story trailer or how Logan navigates seemingly nightmarish environments, there’s your answer.
But that’s not all. Mission Replay is available to re-experience previously cleared parts of the story – perfect for cleaning up any collectibles. Also, unlike the Spider-Man series, New Game Plus is available from day one.
“In a New Game Plus, you can use all of your loadout and progression that you already unlocked. You can choose whatever suit you want. So there’s some fun things that happen there. And also there’s some Adaptations that are only available in New Game Plus. So there’s some fresh gameplay for folks.”
Adaptations are described as elements that can “amp up the difficulty” or turn Wolverine into a “much more powerful and aggressive character.” Further details are required, but they sound like modifiers which players can use to tip the scales in their favor or truly test Logan’s capabilities.
Launching on September 15th, Marvel’s Wolverine will be available exclusively for PS5. In another first, its Performance Mode runs at 60 FPS with ray tracing on the base console – a luxury usually reserved for post-launch.
