It’s too hard to pick just one Game of the Year, so they picked two.

Last year was an amazing year for games, so amazing that many might struggle to pick just one game that was the best of the lot. That includes Famitsu, who decided to just pick two games as their Game of the Year winners instead. Said games are Monster Hunter World by Capcom, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate from Nintendo.

Apart from the two big winners, Pokemon Let’s Go, Fortnite, Dragon Quest Builders 2, and Octopath Traveler all received Excellence Awards as well, which covers a fair few of the notable releases from last year. Red Dead Redemption 2 and God of War don’t seem to have received much recognition in the country, but a lot of that definitely has to do with the difference in tastes between Japan and the west.

Capcom won Developer of the Year—well deserved—and Masahiro Sakurai, the director of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and the creator of the series as a whole, won the MVP Award, which is also well deserved.

Monster Hunter World is out now on PS4, Xbox One, and PC. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is out now on Nintendo Switch.
