Speaking of returning modes, there’s a vast array of mini-games that need to return for the sequel. Test Your Might, Test Your Sight, Puzzle Kombat, Chess Kombat, Motor Kombat – the list goes on and can provide some much-needed variety across different modes. You could say, like co-creator and chief creative officer Ed Boon has, that Mortal Kombat is a lot more serious now.

But once again, with everything essentially reset, there’s the freedom to do all kinds of things with the gameplay. Having some fun diversions without taking away from the core fighting won’t hurt.
