With competitors like Capcom and Bandai Namco revealing news about Street Fighter 6 and Tekken 8, it’s somewhat strange to see NetherRealm Studios missing. The developer last confirmed no announcements at Evo 2022, and it seems that lack of news will carry over into the foreseeable future.
In a new tweet, Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon said, “We know a lot of you are excited about the next NRS game announcement & it will happen in due time. But first, it’s all about 30 years of Mortal Kombat. That’s what we’re going to celebrate and focus on. Our next game announcement will be separate from MK30.”
“MK30” refers to Mortal Kombat’s 30th anniversary, with the first game released on October 8th, 1998. An announcement could thus be happening later this week, but it won’t be for a new game, as Boon indicated in his tweet.
Interestingly, there was already a Mortal Kombat release in August, namely the Mortal Kombat: The 30th Anniversary Ultimate Bundle. It includes Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate, the 2021 Mortal Kombat film, and an exclusive steelbook for £29.99 on Amazon UK. Perhaps this will be made available worldwide instead of exclusively on Amazon UK. Stay tuned for more details in the coming days.
As for the often-rumored Mortal Kombat 12, we may have to wait a little longer.
PSA/FYI We know a lot of you are excited about the next NRS game announcement & it will happen in due time. But first it all about 30 years of Mortal Kombat. That's what we're going to celebrate and focus on.
Our next game announcement will be separate from MK30 ❤️
