Following rumors of the same, Onimusha: Way of the Sword is confirmed to launch on Septemebr 25th for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC. A new trailer sees Musashi venturing to a castle in the mountains where a particularly brutal Genma awaits.
As it turns out, it’s the legendary Shuten-dōji, who fights with about as much ferocity as he parties. It’s all our hero can do to fight back, but it’s not long before he seemingly calls. But on the brink of death, he transforms into none other than the legendary Onimusha, ready to fight. Thankfully, we won’t have to wait long to try it for ourselves as a demo goes live later today.
Releasing a whopping 20 years after the last mainline Onimusha, Way of the Sword offers few connections to previous titles, and instead follows the legendary swordsman, Miyamoto Musashi. After discovering the Oni gauntlet and taking a sudden trip to the afterlife, he’s reborn and sets about ridding Kyoto of demons. Along the way, he also has to deal with Ganryu Sasaki, his rival who also happens to have an Oni gauntlet.
While it’s also a hack-and-slash title like its predecessors, Onimusha: Way of the Sword offers more nuance, with the ability to redirect parried enemies and break their stances for instant execution. It’s not a Souls-like though, and you should expect more of a linear experience rather than an open-world title.
