The Last of Us multiplayer

In the Game and Networks Segment of Sony’s 2023 Business Segment Meeting, SIE president Jim Ryan revealed plans to “evolve” PlayStation’s first-party portfolio. Two or more major releases are planned yearly, covering “every major genre” like Shooters, Racing, RPGs, Platformers, Action and Sports.

It’s looking to balance big franchises with new IPs and will invest 10 percent more into the latter in the fiscal year 2025 (for a 50-50 split), compared to the fiscal year 2023 (which was 40 percent for new IPs vs 60 percent for existing properties). Of course, when it talks about two or more major titles each year, it mentions a mix of single-player and live-service titles.

It’s unknown whether each will have that many releases per year or collectively. Regardless, it’s projecting a 60 percent investment in live service, compared to 40 percent for more “traditional” services for the PS5.

With the next PlayStation Showcase around the corner, we could see some of these live service titles revealed. Perhaps the previously announced The Last of Us standalone multiplayer project will get some gameplay. Stay tuned in the meantime.
