Sony’s been on a rampage with patent filings of late (which makes sense if their next console is on the horizon). The newest patent filed by the company in Japan is for a VR headset—and it seems to indicate a wireless VR headset, which, as any owner of PlayStation VR who has had to fumble with its endless wires during setup will attest to, the current PSVR model is categorically not.

The patent in question seems to be for a breakout box for a wireless headset that switches transmission frequencies to maintain a consistent and steady connection with the headset at all times (in this case, we are looking at switches between 5GHz and 60GHz, with 60GHz seemingly the primary band for connection, and 5GHz being used as a backup band).

Patents don’t always have to materialize in products, but a next generation PlayStation VR headset isn’t really much of a stretch to assume, and making it wireless is one obvious improvement Sony can look at making for it. Here’s hoping this turns out to be indicative of a final product.
