Since the release of the next generation consoles PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, both systems have boasted incredibly high sales rates. In fact they represent the biggest sales boom in console gaming history. However, despite high sales from both consoles, it appears that the PlayStation 4 in particular is the biggest seller of the two, especially in the UK, where PS4 sales outstripped those of Xbox One by 166,000.
The total number of PlayStation 4 units sold in the UK was 530,000 in the five weeks since it’s been released, with Xbox One coming in at 364,000. Even though the gap is significant, to reiterate, these figures both represent the highest sales of any console launch ever by a long shot. In terms of revenue created by the console launch in the UK, the PS4 netted £181.8 million, and the Xbox One £144.5.
Kim Bayley, director general of the ERA commented: “Games continues to deliver digital sales strongly, but it was disappointing that Xbox One and PS4 came so late in 2013 and then huge demand meant stock sold out quickly. Retailers will be working hard in 2014 to maintain the sales momentum of these two great new pieces of kit.”
