Jack Tretton, the head of PlayStation America, in an interview with Fox Business yesterday spoke to his outlook on the current trend of the retail gaming industry:
“We’re talking about the seventh year of a console and I guess if you used a TV analogy, you might say, boy, the re-runs of a show we released seven years ago aren’t doing as well as before. The new machine, and the new console war is going to reinvigorate the industry.”
Sales of physical games have declined in recent years, in the wake of a 2009/2010 industry all time peak. Since that time many of the industry’s biggest publishing companies, such as THQ, Midway, and Atari, have gone bankrupt, with others falling into debt.
According to Tretton, next-gen consoles will be the answer to this problem:
“This will be the biggest launch in history, and you are going to see validation that gaming is healthier than it’s ever been, and the console is at the top of the entertainment pyramid.”
When asked to comment on the advantages of the PS4 to the Xbox One, Tretton commented that the PS4 is overall a more powerful machine, and is priced at $100 cheaper than the Xbox One. PS4 also boasts, in Tretton’s words, the best and most diverse console launch game line-up.
The PS4 releases on November 15th in the US and on November 29th in Europe.
