PLAYING BOTH SIDES
Speaking of Mexico, one of the reasons the storyline specific to that area proved to be as engaging as it was because it saw John caught in the middle of a revolution. Having no allegiance of his own, and wanting nothing more than to track down Javier Escuella, John ended up playing both sides, occasionally doing odd jobs for both sides of the revolution- at least for a while. Dutch, Arthur, and their interactions with the Natives and US Army in the final third of Red Dead 2 were, to an extent, quite similar. Of course, the context was quite different, and Arthur was a reluctant participant in all of this, as opposed to John in Red Dead 1, but the shades of a callback are definitely in there if you look carefully.
