Capcom’s Resident Evil 2 is out tomorrow, and despite the name, it’s not quite a remake or remaster of the 1998 PS One classic. Instead, it re-imagines many of the game’s core elements, from the visuals and level design, all the way to the combat and writing. Nevertheless, Capcom is pretty well aware of the game’s roots – it released a new live-action trailer, which should be familiar to old-school fans.
The trailer is inspired by the trailer created by George A. Romero for Resident Evil 2 in 1998. Romero’s films, from Night of the Living Dead, to Dawn of the Dead, and Day of the Dead, pretty much spawned the slow-moving brain-eating zombie trope that would become a staple of the Resident Evil franchise. It’s good to see Capcom hasn’t forgotten the series’ illustrious history even after all these years.
Resident Evil 2 is out on January 25th for Xbox One, PS4, and PC. The official launch trailer containing actual gameplay can be seen here. You can also read our review of the game here and find out why it’s one of the best games in the franchise yet.
