Among Capcom’s many big releases this year, Resident Evil Requiem’s sales momentum is proving exceptional. After reportedly crossing $500 million in revenue last month, Capcom recently confirmed that the survival horror title has sold 8.58 million copies since launch.
Since it passed eight million sales last July, sales have clearly slowed down. However, the franchise, with an eye-watering 218 million cumulative sales, excels in the long term. Capcom is banking on this, which explains why it’s taking its time with the upcoming story expansion.
Rumored to feature Leon as the main character (and Ada Wong in some role), its scope reportedly expanded following Requiem’s success. While this allegedly helps the company fill the gap between major releases, it’s clearly to rejuvenate sales down the line. We’ve seen this with Resident Evil Village’s Winters’ Expansion and Resident Evil 4’s Separate Ways, the latter more successful than the former in that regard.
While Capcom has yet to reveal anything about the expansion, screenwriter Haris Orkin recently said it would focus on Oswell E. Spencer. Despite being deceased, the Umbrella Corp co-founder has a significant impact on events. You can read more about what we think might happen here, but either way, Resident Evil Requiem is only just getting started.
