While the Resident Evil series – especially since Resident Evil 7 – has focused quite a bit on horror in recent times, it looks like Capcom wants to double down on the scariness with the upcoming Resident Evil Requiem. In an interview with GamesRadar, director Koshi Nakanishi spoke about how the upcoming title will be scary, and even drew comparisons with the infamous House Beneviento section from Resident Evil Village.

“There are similarities to that section for sure,” said Nakanishi. “I think each Resident Evil title has these sort of standalone parts where maybe you don’t have the weapons you’re used to. We can increase the horror feeling with that.”

For context, Nakanishi is also referring to the earlier parts of Resident Evil 7 which focus more on horror and exploration than they do on the franchise’s puzzle solving and action roots. The common link between these early parts of Resident Evil 7 and House Beneviento from Resident Evil Village is how the player didn’t really have any tools or weapons that could be used to fight off the horror lurking in the shadows and around corners. These parts instead focused more on making sure that the player feels helpless.

Much like Resident Evil 7, it looks like Resident Evil Requiem will also start us off with a horror section right off the bat before the title settles back into what the series is traditionally known for. However, Nakanishi noted that Requiem’s scary parts won’t just be a copy-paste of what we saw in House Beneviento.

“We kind of structurally brought that horror aspect to the forefront right at the start of the game, in order to gel with the characterization of Grace of someone who you know is completely unfamiliar with and not expecting to be thrown into such a horrible situation,” explained Nakanishi.

“But we want to add something fresh as well, so rather than just copying and pasting over House Beneviento, [there are] things like the mechanism for how you protect yourself from the creature in the demo, and the creature itself and its design, and how it feels to be pursued by it in this section, are something that I think bring another level to that concept of the claustrophobic, unarmed character section of the game.”

We got to see some of these early, scary parts thanks to gameplay footage of the Resident Evil Requiem playable demo from Gamescom 2025 being revealed. In this video, we got to see a gameplay segment involving protagonist Grace trying to escape from the Rhodes Hill Chronic Care Center. The video gave us a look at the monster that is chasing her, as well as the fact that Grace will have to make use of just about every tool at her disposal to safely make it out of the hospital alive.

Resident Evil Requiem is being developed for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, and will be coming out on February 27, 2026. For more details about the title, check out the Gamescom 2025 trailer for Resident Evil Requiem, as well as our analysis.
