Team Ninja has delivered two excellent Soulslike action RPGs with the Nioh games in recent years, with another one launching imminently in Wo Long: Fallen Dynastybut it looks like the studio will be deviating with a very different – and seemingly a much more ambitious – game next year. Rise of the Ronin, in the works exclusively for PS5, is being billed as an open world action RPG, and as it turns out, it’s a game that has been in the works for quite a long time.

The same was revealed by Koei Tecmo in a recent interview with Famitsu (via Ryokutya), confirming that Rise of the Ronin has been in development for as long as seven years, with production having been running concurrently to the aforementioned Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, in addition to DLC projects. As per the company, development is at its peak right now, and the project seems to be on track to launch in its previously announced timeframe.

Previously, it was confirmed that developer Team Ninja has also received development support on Rise of the Ronin from PlayStation’s UK-based studio XDEV.

Rise of the Ronin is due out next year for the PS5, and Team Ninja is projecting at least 5 million copies sold for the title.
